An ostomy is a surgical procedure to create an opening in the abdominal wall to allow bodily waste to be expelled. This is performed if the individual had trauma to the abdomen, has a bowel obstruction, has colorectal or bladder cancer, or has a condition such as Chron’s disease or ulcerative colitis. The opening created by ostomy surgery is a called a stoma.
